Spay and Neuter FAQs in Montclair, CA

Dog and cat waiting for surgery at Arrow Dog and Cat Hospital

At Arrow Dog & Cat Hospital, we take our mission to protect local pets very seriously. Our spay and neuter procedures allow us to prevent unwanted litters and unnecessary suffering by homeless dogs and cats, but they are also an effective preventative solution for our canine and feline patients. Because we want all Montclair pet owners to understand the ethical and medical benefits of spaying and neutering, we've answered your most common questions about the surgery.

What is a Spay or Neuter Surgery?

Spaying and neutering are gendered terms for the surgical removal of an animal's reproductive organs. We spay female patients by removing their ovaries and neuter male patients by removing their testes, but the result of every surgery is the same: your pet will no longer be able to reproduce. This procedure is very routine and low-risk for most cats and dogs.

Does My Dog or Cat Really Need this Surgery?

Unfortunately, "intact" dogs and cats are more likely to develop some forms of cancer, including testicular cancer for male pets and breast and ovarian cancer for female pets. Spaying and neutering also makes your life easier by curbing the behaviors related to mating and marking territory. For example, neutered dogs are less likely to howl, make escape attempts, or display territorial aggression, while female cats will not suffer painful and messy "heat" cycles throughout their lifetimes.

When Should My Puppy/Kitten Get "Fixed"?

If your puppy or kitten has not been spayed or neutered yet, you may need to act soon in order to maximize the results as much as possible. If dogs and cats are spayed or neutered before they reach sexual maturity, they will enjoy lower risks of cancer, behavioral problems, and other problems related to reproductive organs and hormones. Schedule your first wellness exam at Arrow Dog & Cat Hospital to help your pet look forward to a lifetime of lower health risks.

Do You Have Any Special Prices or Discounts?

Preventing overpopulation and reducing health risks is so important to us, we make it more affordable twice a week. This procedure will eliminate a variety of future expenses and risks, but we know the initial cost can be prohibitive for some patients, so our low-cost spay and neuter clinic is open every Wednesday and Friday for surgical procedures. Our prices start as low as $79 for feline neuters, and our canine rates are based on weight.

We include all sedatives and IV fluids, pre- and post-op pain medications, and even our follow-up suture removal in the cost of each procedure. Unlike other veterinarian hospitals and low-cost clinics, we also operate on patients who are in heat, pregnant, obese, or suffering from an umbilical hernia. If your pet has recently given birth, it's important to get her spayed as soon as the puppies or kittens are weaned, so make sure we have this information when you make the appointment.
